Siding Installation in King, NC

Hardie fiber cement, vinyl, and engineered wood siding for the homes and farmhouses north of Winston-Salem, where mountain-edge weather puts every exterior detail to the test.

Siding for King and Stokes County homes

King sits about 25 minutes north of our Reynolda Road shop, at the southern edge of the Sauratown Mountains with Pilot Mountain visible across much of the area. The housing stock here is a mix that shapes every siding job we do: older farmhouses on 1-5 acre lots, the small subdivisions that have grown around the town center, and 1990s-2000s construction now reaching the age where its original builder-grade siding is failing. We work in King and the surrounding towns — Walnut Cove, Pinnacle, Tobaccoville, Rural Hall — regularly enough to know how exteriors age out here.

A lot of what we re-side in Stokes County is aluminum siding from 1960s and 70s homes, or the thin contractor-grade vinyl that went up on the subdivisions and is now warping in the summer heat. On the older farmhouses, we frequently find wood siding with carpenter ant or termite damage behind it — the same layered, deferred-maintenance pattern we see on the multi-era roofs out here.

Siding is a system, not just a covering

Most siding failures aren’t failures of the material — they’re failures of what’s underneath it. The house wrap, the window and door flashing, the kickout flashing where siding meets a roof, the J-channel at penetrations. When water gets behind siding it stays there and rots the OSB sheathing, and by the time it shows on the outside the damage has been building for years. On King’s larger-lot homes with big roof-to-wall transitions and porch and dormer details, those flashing points multiply — so we build every install on the assumption that water will eventually get behind the siding and needs somewhere safe to drain.

What we install in King

  • Fiber cement (James Hardie / HardiePlank) — the premium standard in the Southeast. Doesn’t burn, rot, or feed termites, holds paint 12-15 years, and lasts 30-50. We’re trained on Hardie’s spec because their warranty depends on fastener type, blind nailing, and gap details being right. A good fit for the larger custom homes and modern-farmhouse builds going up around King.
  • Vinyl (CertainTeed, Mastic) — premium-grade, not the thin stuff that warps. The sensible choice for budget-conscious replacements and rental property.
  • LP SmartSide (engineered wood) — real wood texture with a treated, rot-resistant coating; suits the farmhouse and board-and-batten looks common out here.
  • Cedar shake — specialty work for historic homes and custom applications.

What’s actually in a proper install

We do a full tear-off down to the sheathing — never a cover-over except in specific re-side scenarios — and replace any rotted OSB or plywood we find. Then properly lapped and taped house wrap (Tyvek or equivalent), peel-and-stick flashing at window and door heads, jambs, and sills, kickout flashing at every roof-to-wall meeting, Z-flashing at horizontal lap joints, and full trim and finish carpentry — corners, frieze board, water table, and surrounds. We caulk where it belongs and leave drainage gaps open where it belongs. Hardie ordered primed gets a final paint coat.
