Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

Honest answers to the questions homeowners actually ask before signing a roofing contract. If yours isn't here, just call us — we're happy to walk through it.

How much does a new roof cost in the Triad?
Honest answer: it depends on your roof, and we won't quote a number until we've seen it. The cost of a replacement is driven by square footage, roof pitch, complexity (valleys, chimneys, dormers, skylights), material choice (architectural shingles vs. designer profiles vs. standing seam metal), decking condition, and ventilation upgrades. A single-story ranch with a simple roofline costs dramatically less than a two-story custom home with multiple dormers — and a designer or metal system costs more than standard architectural shingles. Every estimate we provide is itemized line-by-line, so you can see exactly what you're paying for and compare us against other bids fairly. Book a free inspection and we'll walk you through real numbers for your specific roof.
How long does a roof replacement take?
For a typical residential home in the Triad, one to two days. Smaller ranches (under 2,000 sq ft) often finish in a single day. Larger custom homes (3,500+ sq ft) or homes with very complex rooflines may take 3-4 days. Weather can extend timelines — we don't install in rain. Commercial roofs vary widely; we'll give you a project schedule with the estimate.
How long will a new roof last?
It depends on the system. Architectural asphalt shingles installed correctly last 25-30 years, with manufacturer warranties up to 50 years on premium systems. Designer shingles typically carry similar warranties. Standing seam metal lasts 50+ years. Synthetic slate can last 50+ years. Real cedar shake is typically 30 years. Real slate properly installed can last 75-100 years. The bigger factor than the material is installation quality — a 50-year shingle installed wrong won't outlast a 30-year shingle installed right.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We work with several financing partners and can typically offer 0% promotional periods for qualifying homeowners, as well as extended-term financing for larger projects. We can walk you through the options at your estimate. More on financing.
Do you handle insurance claims?
Yes, frequently. We do free inspections, document damage with photos, and provide written reports you can submit to your insurance carrier. We work directly with adjusters when you want us to, or stay in the background if you'd rather handle the claim yourself. We do not pad estimates to insurance — that's fraud, and it's why we still have customers from twenty years ago.
I had a storm chaser knock on my door after the last hail event. Should I trust them?
Almost always: no. The Triad gets visited by out-of-state storm-chasing contractors after every notable hail event. They sign aggressive contracts at the door, sometimes file insurance claims on homeowners' behalf without consent, and are usually gone before the warranty paperwork is processed. If a stranger has been at your house pushing a hail-damage claim, get a second opinion before you sign anything. We do free inspections and we'll tell you the truth about whether you have a claimable loss.
Do you subcontract any of your work?
No. The crew on your roof works for Mid Atlantic Roofing Systems — they're W-2 employees, background-checked, trained annually, and insured under our policies. The crew lead who hands you the warranty paperwork is the same person you call if there's ever a problem.
What does your warranty cover?
Every roofing job comes with our 3-year workmanship warranty in writing. This covers any defect in our installation. The roofing materials carry their own manufacturer warranties — typically 30 to 50 years depending on the system. When we install as a complete Owens Corning system, the Owens Corning System Protection warranty can cover labor as well as materials for replacement up to 50 years.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — and we'd encourage you to ask every roofer you talk to for both. We hold a North Carolina General Contractor license (#101362) — a full GC license, not a limited residential roofing endorsement. We carry $1,000,000 in general liability insurance with Acord, plus workers' compensation on every crew member, plus commercial vehicle coverage. If a contractor can't produce a current certificate of insurance on request, they should not be on your roof.
How long have you been in business?
Mid Atlantic Roofing Systems has been in business since 2016, with a physical office at 2915 Reynolda Rd in Winston-Salem. We're not a pop-up storm-chasing outfit with an out-of-state PO box — you can drive by and meet us.
What does it mean that you're "Owens Corning Platinum Preferred"?
Platinum Preferred is the top tier of Owens Corning's contractor program — held by only 576 contractors in the entire United States. To earn and keep it, a contractor has to pass a background check, carry at least $1M in general liability insurance, pass a credit check, be in good standing with suppliers, have worked with Owens Corning for at least three years, demonstrate ongoing training and workmanship, and submit to random yearly inspections by Owens Corning. The whole vetting process typically takes several years. Practically: it's the qualification that gives us access to Owens Corning's extended System Protection warranties — up to 50 years, including labor.
What is HAAG certification and why does it matter?
HAAG is the engineering and forensics certification that the insurance industry uses to train roof inspectors. A HAAG-certified inspector has a comprehensive understanding of the manufacture, installation, weathering, hail damage, wind damage, maintenance, mechanical damage, and repair costs of every major residential roofing type. In practice, it means when we document storm damage for your insurance claim, our inspection meets the standard adjusters are trained against — and our reports carry weight with carriers.

What is Gorilla and why are you on it?
Gorilla is the insurance industry's largest pre-vetted service-pro network. They independently verify our insurance certificates, our licenses, our background checks, and our ratings and reviews — and continuously monitor us for compliance. If we ever fell out of standing on any of that, we'd be removed from the network. Being a Gorilla-listed contractor means you don't have to take our word for any of our credentials — a neutral third party already checked them.
How do you make sure my shingles match across the whole roof?
We pull all of your shingles from the same lot number. Shingle dye lots can vary just enough to be noticeable in the sun, so on smaller jobs (or partial replacements) sloppy contractors end up with patchwork-looking sections. We order from a single lot so the finished roof reads as one continuous color from the street.
Do you use all the components the manufacturer specifies?
Yes — every one. Starter strips, synthetic underlayment, ice and water shield in vulnerable areas, properly rated ridge cap, balanced intake/exhaust ventilation. Cutting components is the easiest way for a contractor to look cheaper on paper — and the fastest way to void your manufacturer warranty. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor, we install full Owens Corning systems so your System Protection warranty is actually valid.
What's the difference between architectural shingles and designer shingles?
Architectural shingles (Owens Corning Duration, GAF Timberline HDZ) are the dominant residential shingle today. They're dimensional (so they don't have the flat appearance of old three-tab shingles), they carry 30-50 year warranties, and they cost about 30% more than three-tab. Designer shingles (Owens Corning Berkshire, GAF Grand Sequoia) are premium profiles that mimic slate or wood shake. They cost 50-80% more than architectural shingles and are appropriate on larger homes where the roof is highly visible from the street.
Should I repair my roof or replace it?
Depends on the age, the scope of the problem, and how many other repairs you've had recently. As a rough guide: if your roof is under 15 years old and the problem is isolated (a leak around a vent, a few damaged shingles, a flashing detail), repair makes sense. If your roof is 18+ years old and you've had multiple repairs in the last 2 years, repairs are throwing good money after bad — start planning replacement. If your roof is 22+ years old, we generally recommend planning a replacement on your timeline rather than waiting for a leak to force the schedule. We'll come out and give you an honest read.
Do I need to be home during the work?
Not strictly. You should be there for the initial estimate so we can walk through the project and you can ask questions. During the install, it's helpful (not required) to have someone available for any decisions if we find something unexpected during tear-off (e.g., rotted decking). We'll send daily photos and updates.
Will you damage my landscaping or property?
We try very hard not to. Tarps go down over landscape beds, AC units, decks, and play structures before the first shingle comes off. Magnetic sweeps for nails happen multiple times — including final-pass sweeps the day we leave. We have insurance that covers any accidental damage. If something does get damaged, we tell you immediately and we make it right.
What if it rains during the install?
We don't install in rain. If a storm is coming in, we tarp the in-progress roof securely and reschedule the remaining work for the next clear day. The tarps are real tarps, weighted and fastened — not the blue painters' tarps you can get at a big-box store.
Can you install a roof over my existing roof?
Technically yes (it's called a 'layover' or 'overlay'), and it's allowed by code in some scenarios. But we don't recommend it and rarely do it. Layovers trap heat, hide rotting decking underneath, void manufacturer warranties on most modern shingles, and shorten the new roof's life by years. Tear-off is the right call almost every time, and the additional cost is small relative to the total project.
Do you do gutters, siding, windows, and other exterior work?
Yes. We're a full-service exterior contractor. See all our services. Many of our customers do roof + gutter projects together — we can install drip edge and gutters in the correct sequence, which saves money and gives a better result than doing them separately.
How do I know if my roof has storm damage?
Some damage is obvious from the ground (missing shingles, large dents in metal flashing, debris on the roof). A lot of hail damage isn't visible from the ground — it presents as bruises or punctures in individual shingles that you can only see on the roof. If a storm has rolled through and you're not sure, we'll do a free inspection and tell you whether you have a claimable loss.
Are you really family-owned?
Yes. Mid Atlantic Roofing Systems is a small family business based on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem. We're not a regional chain with a local zip code — and not a franchise of a national brand.
