That matters for windows more than most people realize, because window estimates take an hour, install crews come back for trim work, and the warranty conversation can happen years later. Winston-Salem’s housing stock is unusually varied, and the right window depends heavily on which neighborhood you’re in. The window that belongs in a 1920s West End home is not the window that belongs in a Clemmons subdivision built in 2004.
What we see across the city
In the older neighborhoods — Buena Vista, West End, Ardmore, and the Old Salem / Moravian district — we mostly see original wood double-hungs that have lost their glazing, rotted at the sill, or been painted shut decades ago. Here we steer homeowners toward wood-clad windows (wood interior, fiberglass or aluminum exterior). The painted interior wood matches the character of the home, and the clad exterior means no more scraping and repainting every few years. For homes in the historic district, we keep the sightlines and proportions period-appropriate.
Out in Sherwood Forest, Forest Hills, and Konnoak Hills, where the 1960s and 70s ranches are, the original aluminum or builder-grade windows are usually drafty single-pane units bleeding conditioned air. In the newer subdivisions toward Clemmons, Lewisville, and Pfafftown, builder-grade vinyl from twenty years ago is hitting failed seals all at once — foggy glass between the panes across the whole house. A good window in a bad install is a bad window
The glass specs — U-factor, low-E, argon — matter, but they matter far less than the install. A premium window foamed in and prayed over will underperform a mid-grade window that was flashed correctly. Our installs aren’t dramatic; they’re slow and done by the book:
- We pull the existing window completely and inspect the rough opening — sill rot is common in the older West End and Ardmore homes.
- We install a sill pan so any water that gets in has somewhere to drain.
- We flash the head and jambs with peel-and-stick membrane lapped over the nail fin and taped to the house wrap.
- We full-perimeter air seal with low-expansion foam, then handle interior trim and exterior caulk.
For our Climate Zone 4 weather, we recommend a U-factor of 0.30 or better and a lower SHGC on west and south exposures to cut the afternoon heat gain that bakes the back of the house in July.

Since we’re roofers first, we also install Velux skylights — the flashing kit is the whole game, and theirs is the standard — plus sun tunnels for bathrooms, closets, and hallways where a full skylight would be overkill.
